Brasil Guitar Duo plays Gismonti marks 25 years of artistic immersion in the music of Egberto Gismonti — composer, mentor, and dear friend to the duo. A towering figure in Brazilian music, Gismonti’s unmistakable voice blends lyrical refinement, rhythmic complexity, and richly layered polyphony.
From their earliest years as students, João Luiz and Douglas Lora found in Gismonti’s music both artistic inspiration and technical challenge. Over decades of study, performances, and close collaboration with the composer himself, the duo developed a profound and authentic connection to his musical language.
With the exception of Alegrinho No 2, the only piece originally written for guitar, every work on this album was transcribed directly from Gismonti’s own piano recordings rather than from published scores. Crafted over many years, these arrangements faithfully preserve every note and interpretative nuance, making this project both distinctive and authoritative.
The inclusion of the 7-string guitar expands the duo’s range and allows them to embrace the orchestral and polyphonic dimensions of Gismonti’s writing, particularly in Frevo, 7 Anéis, Forrobodó, and Sonhos de Recife. His lyrical, song-like voice shines in Don Quixote and Bodas de Prata & Quatro Cantos, whose closing chords flow seamlessly into the next track — echoing Gismonti’s own performance practice.
More than a recording, this album represents the fulfillment of a lifelong artistic dream — a heartfelt tribute to Egberto Gismonti, whose mentorship and uncompromising musical vision profoundly shaped the journey of Brasil Guitar Duo.
