In the album Suites & Sonatas, guitarist Marcelo Kayath presents a program that brings together works from different periods of European music—many of them originally written for other instruments—revealing how the guitar can engage with some of the most celebrated repertoire of the classical tradition.
The program opens with the monumental Lute Suite in C minor, BWV 997 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Written in Leipzig around 1740, the work contains many of the hallmarks of Bach’s style: an expansive prelude, a sophisticated contrapuntal fugue, the serene introspection of the sarabande, and a vibrant gigue that brings the suite to a brilliant close.
Kayath then turns to music by Silvius Leopold Weiss, one of the greatest lutenists of the Baroque era and a contemporary of Bach. The Suite in F major included in the album combines movements drawn from different manuscripts preserved in Dresden—a practice common in the lute repertoire—and reveals Weiss’s melodic elegance and virtuosic writing.
The program moves into the early nineteenth century with the expressive Sonata Op.15b by Fernando Sor, a work that reflects the classical style of its time and shows clear influences from the Italian operatic overtures of the late eighteenth century.
The album concludes with the refined Guitar Sonata Op.77 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, written in 1934 at the request of the legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia. Conceived as a tribute to the style of Luigi Boccherini, the work unfolds in four movements rich in lyricism, elegance, and vitality.
With refined interpretation and great musical sensitivity, Marcelo Kayath reveals how works from different historical contexts can gain new colors and perspectives through the expressive voice of the guitar.
✨ An album that highlights the versatility of the instrument and its ability to engage with great works of the classical tradition.
