Black Bile is a deeply evocative album by Zoran Dukić, in which melancholy becomes the central thread of a program that spans centuries, cultures, and musical languages. Inspired by the ancient concept of “black bile” — once believed to be the source of melancholy — the album explores universal emotions such as longing, nostalgia, grief, and introspection through some of the most compelling works in the guitar repertoire.
From the Renaissance introspection of John Dowland to the Baroque intensity of Sylvius Leopold Weiss, and from the modern voices of Debussy, Manuel de Falla, William Walton, and Alan Rawsthorne, the album unfolds as a rich and immersive emotional journey. Iconic works such as Agustín Barrios’s Choro da Saudade, Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion (arranged by Roland Dyens), and Rawsthorne’s haunting Elegy for Guitar expand the expressive range of the program.
The album also features cinematic references in Cinema Paradiso by Stephen Goss, as well as a sensitive personal transcription of Duke Ellington’s Melancholia by the performer himself.
