In this project, Paulo Martelli presents newly created transcriptions of works by Johann Sebastian Bach for modern 11-string guitar. The term “baroque guitar,” as used in the title, does not refer to the historical baroque guitar, but to an extended-range contemporary instrument adopted by the performer to further explore the polyphonic and structural dimensions of the repertoire.
The 11-string guitar provides increased sustain, expanded range, and reinforced bass lines, offering particularly favorable conditions for the realization of Bach’s contrapuntal writing. The program includes the French Suite No. 1, BWV 812 (in a transposed version), the Prelude BWV 924, and selected movements from the Cello Suites, including Suite No. 1, BWV 1007 and Suite No. 6, BWV 1012, in transcriptions that seek a balance between stylistic integrity and instrumental idiom.
This release reflects an approach that combines musicological awareness, technical refinement, and interpretative vision, reaffirming Paulo Martelli’s artistic commitment to expanding both the repertoire and expressive possibilities of the contemporary guitar.
