Four – Quaternaglia is part of the Guitarcoop catalogue as a landmark recording in the artistic arch of the Quaternaglia Guitar Quartet, representing an expansion of aesthetic horizons following decades devoted to Brazilian repertoire. The album brings together works by Leonard Bernstein, Leo Brouwer, Javier Farías, and Astor Piazzolla, establishing a dialogue among diverse musical traditions of the Americas and reaffirming the guitar quartet as a versatile chamber ensemble.
The program features the world premiere recording of Así era la dancita aquella! (2018), commissioned and dedicated to the quartet by Leo Brouwer, a work that synthesizes Afro-Caribbean rhythmic elements with the composer’s mature stylistic language. Also included are Memorial para un regreso (2017) by Javier Farías, a suite dedicated to Pablo Neruda; a transcription of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story (1961) by Thiago Tavares; and Four for Tango (1988) by Astor Piazzolla, presented in a version for four guitars.
By combining contemporary original works with large-scale transcriptions of orchestral repertoire, Four reflects Guitarcoop’s commitment to expanding the guitar quartet repertoire and documenting the presence of Brazilian performers within the international concert landscape.
