CONCERTO APINAYÉ for guitar and orchestra was composed by Rafael Marino Arcaro between August 2018 and August 2019 in London, U.K.; Cascais, Portugal; and, São Paulo, Brazil.
SHORT NOTE:
The Apinayé (‘Apinajé’ in current Portuguese spelling) are a people that constitute a tribe of the indigenous of North Tocantins, on a region known as Bico do Papagaio, in Brazil. This Concerto is inspired by their culture, their music and their ways of living, as well as by their myths as described by anthropologist Curt Nimuendajú. In this work for Guitar and Orchestra, the soloist is required to sing; he/she is asked to sing the Apinajé words, Ipãma, Icrá, Indê, Inã – which translates to Father, Son, Daughter, Mother. Following that is a word used by the Apinajé to ask for silence before an evocation or a prayer “Anhíkrê ná”. The melody given to these words is inspired by a melody of a tradition Apinajé song. These lyrics relate to the current situation of the tribe and the slow death of their culture. Alone against the Orchestra the guitarist cries out for his previous and following generations with no answer. Father! Son! Daughter! Mother! – alone.
